Mildred Thompson

The only words I have to describe Mildred Thompson is that she was truly a renaissance woman. She was every woman; multi-talented, and mastering multiple disciplines.

Where Science, and music and art are one. “Thompson, influenced by the abstract paintings of the early modernists such as Wassily Kandinsky, consciously turned away from the creation of representational imagery to fully focus her craft on the abstract, choosing to artistically interpret scientific and musical theories that are not visible to the naked eye.”https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?id=9056079978&story_fbid=10153202312334979

In her own words:

“My work in the visual arts is, and always has been, a continuous search for understanding,” Thompson said. “It is an expression of purpose and reflects a personal interpretation of the universe. Each new creation presents a visual manifestation of the sum total of this life long investigation and serves as a reaffirmation of my commitment to the arts.”

In the early 1970s Thompson consciously eschewed representational imagery to exclusively champion the language of abstraction. Her practice transcended ever-changing art world trends and prevailing narratives prescribed by her generation, race and gender. She instead chose freedom of exploration, defying norms and refusing to be categorized.

She was an abstract artist whose body of work included photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, writer, and editor. Critics have related her art to West African textiles and Islamic architecture; they have also cited German Expressionism, music and readings of metaphysics, and spiritualism.
